Moto Guzzi Stelvio, break out from the BMW GS crowd with the Stelvio or Stelvio NTX.

"Compared to the BMW GS, the Guzzi engine is generally smoother and particularly when revved hard, while gear selection is lighter and more positive. The throttle response is crisp and there's a general air of solid development about the whole engine and transmission. For instance, Aprilia's engineers also revised the clutch for a lighter lever action and reduced mass to improve engine response, both discernible improvements. Finally, there's individuality, and this matters – the runaway sales of the GS mean the roads are awash with them. The Stelvio will be much rarer, yet it's as capable as the GS. It doesn't have the badge or quite the presence of the German machine, but it's a worthy alternative. "

"This 1151cc V-twin is certainly a solid unit. Taken from the muscle-bound Griso, in Stelvio form revised fuel injection and a different exhaust are said to boost midrange torque, while knocking around 5hp off its peak power. On the road it actually seemed a little lacking right down low, but an admirably chunky midrange builds seamlessly into a zesty top end, which continues a little past its indicated 8000rpm redline."

"The Moto Guzzi Stelvio 1200 NTX is a well equipped tourer with large solid panniers and ABS mounted as standard. All the extras available on the NTX cost about 1,000 Euro (US$1,400) more compared to a standard Stelvio. Both versions get the 2009 second generation Quattro Valvole engine though, but the extra protection and those sexy aluminium panniers are worth the premium. The air-cooled 1151cc V90 is a gem and makes for a relaxed but still sporty as you like touring experience. The extra torque was very welcome in the high altitude Alpine passes."

"Once aboard, the Moto Guzzi Stelvio feels roomy and ready for the long haul with an easy reach to the slightly raised one-piece handlebar and fairly low-set pegs. The windscreen leaves a cocoon of still air, which is great because the Guzzi is plenty powerful to cruise at highway speeds. Adding optional touring accessories such as hand guards, saddlebags and heated grips should further increase its long-distance ability. Retained practical touches include the lockable fairing compartment, underseat storage, sturdy luggage rack and comprehensive, handlebar-operated instrument panel."
