"Overriding the niggles is the engine’s muscular performance, revving pretty easily and offering impressive mid-range power with the usual Ducati-perfect fuel delivery, plus a dash of style and fun that will make many riders fall completely in love with the bike. And that surely is what it’s really all about."

"What impressed as much the 796’s grunty mid-size motor and its precise steering but rock-steady chassis, was the sublime performance from the dual 4-piston radial-mount Brembos squeezing 305mm semi-floating rotors. I’ve ridden other bikes with similar type Brembos, but for some reason the set on the Hypermotard 796 seemed a step above with their superb levels of feel and adequate stopping force. Really, this was a brilliant choice by Ducati."

Visually, it’s difficult to distinguish the 796 from the 1100 as the majority of its parts are shared including its plastic hand guards with integrated LED turn signals, flip-out mirrors, and LED taillight that glows brighter during braking. Aside from those components a keen eye will see the differences in suspension, tires, and belly exhaust pre-silencer, as well as the updated orange-backlit instrument panel as used on the Streetfighter.

"Despite rumours that the 796 would borrow the motor from the Monster 696, it has an entirely new engine. The air-cooled, four-valve V-twin actually displaces 803 cc and though it uses the same bore as the 696, it has a longer stroke (66 versus 57.2 mm), resulting in 5 lb-ft boost in peak torque, that arrives 1,500 rpm sooner (max output of 55.7 lb-ft @ 6,250 rpm). Claimed horsepower is 81, an impressive number when considering BMW’s F800 twin pumps out just a handful more horsepower using liquid cooling and eight valves. Service intervals are at every 12,000 km."

"Ducati’s entry-level 803cc Hypermotard 796 is a stormer of a machine. It’s 12kg lighter and its seat is 20mm lower than the Hypermotard 1100, which makes it easier to ride and in the real world, and every bit as fast from A to B. It’s a deal cheaper too and Ducati says it will return 58.9mph, which makes it the most frugal Ducati you can buy. Best of all its still massive fun and looks the part too."
